Wowzers! A Praying Mantis visits the shower room

I love these things. Ever since I shared a boat journey with a massive green one in Borneo. They have such poise and character – like wise miniature aliens. The moment this one spotted my camera it started to slowly and politely exit the shower room, as if hoping I wouldn’t notice. I didn’t know Cyprus has Praying Mantises until I saw a baby one – a nymph – sitting on the washing line a few months ago. Gabriel was fascinated so we studied it in his bug box before returning it outside. Today was the first time I’ve seen an adult one in Cyprus.

Hi, I'm Julia

I love travelling and have been all over the world with my husband, Matt. Going home always sucked. I wanted more – I wanted to live abroad. When my son Goobie was born, I took a career break from publishing books in London. So, when Matt’s job gave us the opportunity to move to Cyprus, we grabbed it with both hands, ready to embrace everything Cyprus has to offer. Follow us as we explore this amazing island, from the beautiful to the baffling, the exciting to the downright embarrassing.
