My parents-in-law are here for a visit and, after a tiring day travelling yesterday, they fancied a gentle day today. With the temperature being 20-odd degrees (compared to 4 degrees in the UK) we didn’t want to stay in, so we drove to Pissouri Bay. Pissouri is a 30-minute drive from Paphos, just off the A6 motorway. Follow signs to Pissouri Jetty or the Columbia Beach Hotel and you will reach the bay (not to be confused with the village, which is on the hill). There’s one main street in the bay area, lined with restaurants and souvenir shops. I’ve eaten at Saffron, a good Indian restaurant, and Artemis, serving decent Cypriot food.
Today, we had lunch at Captain’s Bay, a seafront restaurant. Turn left at the mini roundabout and it’s just opposite the side entrance to the Columbia Beach Hotel. Captain’s Bay is a perfect lunchtime spot for families. It has a good children’s menu and a small playground for younger children – plus there’s the beach for older children to play on while they are waiting for their food. There’s an extensive menu selling everything from pasta and pizza to fish, burgers and chicken dishes, traditional Cypriot food and vegetarian options. Prices range from €8-20 for a main course and I enjoyed the swordfish in a creamy garlic sauce. We’ve eaten at Captain’s Bay for an evening meal too – it’s a nice spot to watch the sunset.
We walked off lunch with a stroll along the beach. It has a nice mix of pebbles and sand – and, if you are lucky, you might find some sea glass. There are beach showers, changing rooms and a lifeguard’s station for the tourist season. Kembali Diving is based here and today jet-skiers were roaring up and down the bay.
As we walked back, Goobie started an extended game of hide-and-seek.
‘Mummy, let’s play hide-and-seek! I’m going to hide behind that tree and you have to count to 20.’
I love this age.
