Dancing for Two – Fun at Guaba

Dancing for Two – Fun at Guaba

Finally! A week before it closes for the season, I made it to Guaba for a day of laughs, dancing and awesome music with my girlfriends.

Guaba Beach Bar has regularly been voted in the Top 100 Clubs in the World, coming 19th this year for best club and 3rd for best beach bar. Located near the tourist end of Limassol’s beach front, I thought it was a children’s soft play centre when we first drove past it. Its garish exterior makes it quite a landmark on the endless B1 coastal road.

Actually, it looks more like a haunted house in this photo!

Guaba is open for the whole summer period, attracting a host of guest DJs, including Fedde Le Grand. My first visit was to its annual Opening Party last year. The day passed in a happy blur of dancing, refreshing dips in the sea and having Guaba Nectar poured down my throat by elaborately-dressed professional dancers.

I’ve wanted to go to Guaba all summer this year but, to be honest, I just didn’t feel up to it. Too knackered and sick in the early part of my pregnancy and, as summer heated up, I didn’t fancy any long days in the sun. Instead, I’d been waiting for the temperature to cool a little – and thank goodness it did in time.

I remembered that Guaba was rammed at the opening party last year and so I reserved a VIG (Very Important Guabian) table this year in case my 7-months-pregnant body ran out of puff. Reserving a table was simple – I emailed Guaba our numbers and got a very swift response. The cost for reserving a VIG table is having to purchase a €100 bottle of booze (a variety of choices available). Split between six of us, this didn’t seem too much to pay – particularly since entry was free.

Guaba opens at midday and we got there for 1pm. For a normal, laid-back Sunday Guaba (i.e not an opening/closing party or guest DJ) this was a mistake. It was utterly dead!

We were a tad early

As we had the pick of ANY table, we cancelled our VIG table and sat on the beach for a few hours, being served rounds by a friendly waiter and taking a dip in the sea. It was a chilled way to start our Guaba day.

Mmm, not this time thank you

I love Guaba Nectar, but this was the closest I came to shots

By 4pm the music was ramping up and by 5pm it was so good it was too painful to remain seated. We took our drinks up to the dance area and started off the dancing. The DJ spotted that I was pregnant and invited me up to the DJ’s box where he put his earphones on my bump.

As the sun went down and the dance floor filled up, my bump and I got quite a lot of attention! Men and women coming up, guessing – correctly – that I was carrying a boy. Someone helped me up onto the podium, another DJ bowed to me. It was all a little surprising – and lovely. But that’s what I remember from my previous visit to Guaba – how unpretentious and friendly it is. Just loads of people coming together to have fun and be their glorious drunken (or sober!) selves.

I needed help getting up there

And of course, there was the music. For me, that’s what it’s always about. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I absolutely live for dance music – and where better to experience it? I listen to it all day. Sometimes I think I’ve caught the sound of some trance track in the air and go ‘wow, that sounds amazing’ – only to discover that it’s the rhythmic sound of the air-con coupled with the bang of building works down the road. Ha ha ha!!!

Of course, dancing is a bit of a challenge at the moment seeing as I can’t really move my hips much. So I just moved in a way that felt comfortable for my bump and to hell with what I looked like.

Guaba closed at 9pm and we left at 8.30pm. We’d danced for a solid 3 hours!

Three days later at an antenatal check-up, I discovered that Hercules had turned. He’s no longer back-to-back, which is great news. He’s still breech mind you, so perhaps another extended dance session is in order.

Guaba’s end of season Closing Fiesta is on this Sunday, 1st October. It opens at 12noon and entry is free if you arrive before 3pm, €10 before 5pm and €20 after. Enjoy!

Hi, I'm Julia

When my son Goobie was born, I took a career break from publishing books in London. So, when Matt’s job gave us the opportunity to move to Cyprus, we grabbed it with both hands, ready to embrace everything Cyprus has to offer. Follow us as we explore this amazing island, from the beautiful to the baffling, the exciting to the downright embarrassing.
